Students engage with images and information daily on the Internet, primarily on social media outlets such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter. So often in our society these websites are looked at as the downfall of our culture: fake news spreading constantly, text-speak dominating discourse, the curse of the 280 character limit. What if teachers, instead of turning their noses up at social media, embraced our students’ foundational knowledge of it and used it to enhance literacy? In this session, we are going to explore how to research credible sources to create infographics about important and pressing current event issues in order for students to be agents of change.
